about

In anticipation of his first solo EP since 2017’s ‘Mundane Solutions’, Phrixus will be releasing ‘Random Beats and Pieces’, an eclectic collection of tracks made over the year that represents the artist’s own musical progression. About the release, Phrixus says:

“As an artist, you always leave in your wake a detritus of material - stuff sequestered to the dark recesses of your hard drive, destined to be quickly forgotten. Whilst it is easy to forget about this material forever, I see these pieces as valuable markers of my own progression; milestones which represent where I’ve been and where I’m going. With this in mind, I took a look back at what I had been making and discarding this year and was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. As a result, I have chosen to release four tracks from this collection of random material that I am most proud of. Putting this material out there is a cathartic process for me, allowing me to let go of music I have already made and to look forward to the future.”

Kicking off the release is the tongue-in-cheek ‘Why Go To Disneyland If You’ - a playful, chaotic ode to early 2000s IDM such as Telefon Tel Aviv and Richard Devine. Peppered with telephone bleeps, off-kilter drums and Phrixus’ trademark approach to sound design, this track balances humour and chest-rattling bass-weight expertly.

Continuing along the bass heavy route is ‘Some Bad Things’, a guttural shutdown of a track held together by a wonked-out bassline which weaves its way over a brutal sequence of rapid-fire percussion and organic squelches. This track demonstrates Phrixus’ expert control over bass, and his ability to juxtapose organic noises with ruthless digital instrumentation.

‘Ovr My Suol’ takes the release in a completely different, altogether more gentle direction, bringing together influences from footwork, ambient and 70s/80s porn soundtracks and demonstrating this young artist’s skilful eclecticism, as well as showing his ability to expertly create a sense of space.

Pulling us further down the introspective wormhole and finishing up the release is the OPN inspired ‘It’s Hard 2 B Strong Sometimes’, a full-flung ambient affair topped off with a momentous crescendo of auto-tuned coos and grime-esque leads.
