I don't even know you But I'm calling out your name Heartaches breaks and pains It's driving me insane Everything round you spells a cataclysmic doom Everyone round me says she offers space to move Even if doubts claw me I'll push against the grain Talk to myself A sure thing's assured to be attained Everything round you offers chances to improve My whole life's a mess, I should be standing next to you So I keep Holding back These phantoms Bring me down I need some space to move

about

Phrixus returns with the next instalment of Random Beats & Pieces, a series of hard drive extraditions manifested as self releases.

Effortlessly sliding between fragments of bmore, footwork, sci-fi film music, noise and IDM, the EP showcases the wildly rich tapestry of influences and sounds the London-based beat maker and sound designer is known for.

Kicking off proceedings are the warped garage sonics of ‘Configurations of Movement’. Phrixus’s own voice oozes over a gentle ambient soundscape, before things descend into an organic broken beat step - the perfect set opener for those who like it on the left field side.

Next up, ‘Bmore>STAND UP!’ hits hard with an arrangement aimed squarely at the dance floor. A brutal brass line dominates the opening, with influences clearly discerned from Rod Lee and DJ Technic’s Bmore club productions, before the tune’s effortlessly simplistic and wickedly effective main focus pulls in.

Things descend into dark, broken digital spaces in ‘SD_RIP’. Feedback loops and broken dial tones float and hang, before coalescing into a relentless piece of industrial club. The result sounds like what one would imagine if Richard Devine or Vaexth began making footwork.

The sonic landscape then rises into the glimmering world of ‘Garden Of Displeasure’. Taking clear influences from Machinedrum and Lapalux’s respective sonic worlds, the piece demonstrates Phrixus’s deft ability to create huge dynamic shifts and contrasts which sound just as good on headphones as they do on the dance floor.

Closing things out is the theme from critically acclaimed London director Quba’s award winning short film ‘A Separation’. For fans of the late Johan Johannson’s work on ‘Mandy’, the soundtracks drips in 80s warmth and menacing, mechanised brass lines, showing Phrixus is just as comfortable composing for picture as he is for the dance floor.
